World Briefing | The Americas: Argentina: Torture Suspect
15 Dec 2007 05:40:34An autopsy found a large quantity of cyanide in the blood of Héctor Febres, a former coast guard officer and the only suspected torturer at the notorious Navy Mechanics School in Buenos Aires during the 1976-83 military dictatorship whose case has made it to trial. He was found dead in his cell before breakfast on Monday, four days before an expected verdict and a possible sentence of life in prison. An investigation is under way, and the police have detained his wife and two grown children, who reportedly dined with him the night before his body was found.
