Arts, Briefly: Praise for a Restoration
25 Jun 2008 06:13:51Expanding its drive to preserve Modernist landmarks, the World Monuments Fund has awarded a prize to two German architects who restored a Bauhaus-era school, above, for the German trade union confederation. Winfried Brenne and Franz Jaschke, both of Berlin, are the first recipients of the Knoll Modernism Prize, established to recognize architects and designers who rejuvenate Modern structures. The pair re-exposed elements of the 1928-30 ADGB Trade Union School in Bernau, Germany, that were hidden or removed during the East German era, like glass brick, stainless steel and the original bright red color of the steel framing. The jury was led by Barry Bergdoll, chief curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art, and included the architectural historians Kenneth Frampton, Jean-Louis Cohen and Dietrich Neumann. The prize consists of a $10,000 honorarium and a limited-edition chair made by Knoll.
