Arts, Briefly: More Closing Doors
24 Jun 2008 07:58:30Regional theaters aren’t the only cultural places falling on hard times. Cody’s Bookstore in Berkeley, Calif., a literary lighthouse for more than 50 years, closed for good on Friday. Yohan Inc., a Japanese distributor and retailer, bought the store in 2005, and Hirosho Kagawa, Yohan’s president, said in a statement posted on the bookstore’s Web site, codysbooks.com: “Unfortunately, my current business is not strong enough or rich enough to support Cody’s. Of course, the store has been suffering from low sales and the deficit exceeds our ability to service it.” During the 1960s the bookstore was an outpost of the Free Speech Movement. Mr. Kagawa was one of the many writers and readers who fell in love with the store. This is a “heartbreaking moment,” he said, adding, “It means so much to me and I apologize to the people who have supported Cody’s for not being able to keep this landmark independent bookstore open.”.
