Arts, Briefly: Moonves Schmoozes
19 Apr 2008 06:00:05Leslie Moonves, below, the chairman of CBS, and Sean McManus, the president of CBS News, made a surprise visit to the regular noon meeting at CBS News headquarters on Friday and delivered pep talks to the news division, which has endured a week of reports of uncertainty about the future of Katie Couric, the anchor of the network’s nightly news. “The genesis was, both were getting frustrated with everything being written about CBS News,” said one executive who attended the meeting and asked not to be named because the meeting was intended to be off the record. Mr. Moonves was “very forceful,” the executive said, quoting him as saying that he “could not be happier with the content of CBS News and with the ‘Evening News’ anchor” and that Ms. Couric would be the anchor “today, tomorrow and in the future,” while acknowledging that the ratings for the evening newscast were “very frustrating.” CBS executives held a meeting in February to discuss possible changes in Ms. Couric’s role, but the executive who was at the meeting said no decisions would be made until after the presidential election. Ms. Couric also addressed the meeting and thanked the staff for working hard despite the rumors, specifically thanking the London bureau for setting up an exclusive interview with the prime minister of Britain, Gordon Brown. Mr. Manus was also “looking to buck people up,” the executive said, and emphasized that there was no better news division than CBS’s.
