Arts, Briefly: Italian Performance Artist Found Slain in Tur
17 Apr 2008 00:53:08An Italian artist, hitchhiking through Turkey in a wedding dress as part of an international art-performance piece, was raped and strangled by a driver who picked her up, government officials say. The naked body of the artist, Giuseppina Pasqualino di Marineo, 33, was found Saturday in the bushes in Gebze, a village in Kocaeli province, about 70 miles southeast of Istanbul, said Sadik Guvenc, a village official, quoted by the Anatolian Agency. He said that a suspect, Murat Karatas, identified on Saturday after using the victim’s cellphone with his own smart card, led investigators to the body. Stefano Canzio, the Italian consul in Istanbul, told the Italian news agency Ansa that Mr. Karatas had confessed to the killing. Wearing wedding dresses, left, Ms. di Marineo, known professionally as Pippa Bacca, and Silvia Moro, another artist, had left Milan on a mission to promote peace. They planned to hitchhike through the Balkans and Turkey en route to Tel Aviv, their final stop. They parted ways on March 19, agreeing to meet later in Beirut, but Ms. di Marineo fell out of touch. The last sign of her was a phone message sent to a friend in Italy and a purchase on her credit card in Gebze on March 31. Her body has been flown back to Italy.
