Arts, Briefly: Hollywood Report Card
06 Mar 2008 05:52:00The average price of movie tickets jumped 5 percent last year to $6.88; the number of tickets sold in the United States and Canada edged up three-tenths of one percent to 1.4 billion, and domestic box-office revenue rose 5.4 percent to a record $9.6 billion, according to an annual survey of the theatrical movie market released on Wednesday by the Motion Picture Association of America. During a conference call with reporters, Dan Glickman, the association’s chief executive, said the number of films taking in more than $100 million at the box office expanded sharply. “When people liked us, they really loved us,” Mr. Glickman said. According to the figures, compiled in partnership with Nielsen EDI, the international box office expanded about 4.9 percent to $26.7 billion. That figure was given a boost by the weakness of the dollar against some foreign currencies, including the euro. One of the more startling year-to-year changes was a sharp rise in spending by the studios’ specialty divisions, which make and distribute some films intended for the annual awards races and others aimed at getting fans of horror and other genres. According to the report such divisions’ investment in production rose 6 percent to an average $42.9 million per movie, while marketing costs jumped 44 percent to $25.7 million.
