Arts, Briefly: Bayreuth Goes Digital
02 Jul 2008 04:56:51With its presentation of “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” this month, the annual Bayreuth festival in Germany, which celebrates the music of its founder, Richard Wagner, will offer streaming video and audio live on the Internet for $77, The Associated Press reported. Organizers said they hoped the online broadcast would draw new audiences to the festival, where tickets are so scarce that fans can wait seven years or more for the chance to buy them. “Those are complicated hoops,” said Katharina Wagner, a great-granddaughter of the composer, whose new staging of “Die Meistersinger,” above, had its premiere last summer. “But for those who only know Bayreuth by name, maybe they will say, ‘O.K., I’ll check it out if I can watch it at home on my laptop.’ ” The Metropolitan Opera in New York and La Scala in Milan have offered high-definition video at movie theaters, but at prices closer to $24. Alexander Busche, Bayreuth’s spokesman, said the price would offset the cost of filming and purchasing media rights. The premiere is on July 27; the video will be available for paid download at bayreuther-festspiele.de through Aug. 2.
