Arts, Briefly: At Ballet Hispanico

Tina Ramirez, the founder of Ballet Hispanico, announced Monday that she was hanging up her shoes after 38 years as artistic director. “I am planning to continue as a roving ambassador and spokesperson for the company and school and to carry forward my work as an advocate for dance education,” she said in a news release. Ms. Ramirez, above right, was awarded the National Medal of Arts for in 2005 for her work over the years. She has said that her father, a bullfighter, first taught her to dance. The unifying element, to her, has always been the music. “I wanted to show who Hispanics are,” she once told The New York Times. “Our culture. Why we move the way we do. Our music. There is so much that unites us, like language and love of home and family. Yet there’s so much variety within the given.”.
