Arts, Briefly: An Auction for Love and for Money

A Valentine’s Day charity auction at Sotheby’s in New York raised more than $42.5 million to benefit H.I.V./AIDS relief programs in Africa, far above the presale estimate of about $29 million, The Associated Press reported. Organized by Sotheby’s, Bono, Damien Hirst (whose “Where There’s a Will There’s a Way,” above, was among the works sold) and the Gagosian Gallery, the event set sale records for 17 artists, including Howard Hodgkin, Marc Quinn and Keith Tyson, and included pieces by Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons and Ed Ruscha. Proceeds will go the United Nations Foundation and will support programs run by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
